Planting Instructions For Leyland Cypress and Green Giant Arborvitae

  1. Upon arrival of your order, open box and unpack, standing trees upright, then water.

  2. Prepare holes by mixing 1/2 humus to 1/2 native soil, if your soil is good nothing is needed, if very poor add more. The Leyland Cypress has a small root system, dig your hole larger than the root system to be planted. The loosened soil will allow the new root system to grow faster giving your new tree a better start. If planting in clay soils, best to dig your hole several feet deep, back filling with good soil, this will help with drainage.

  3. Plant your trees at the same depth as they were growing before. Press soil firmly around the roots. As you go along, stake & loosely tie trees in straight vertical position with Bamboo Stakes.

  4. When finished planting, water your trees with a solution of Root Stimulator and fertilize with time release Osmocote 15-9-12 plus minors 8 to 9 month or 12 to 14 month. For improved growth, (up to 3 times the growth) use Weed Barrier ground cover & mulch.

THIS IS IMPORTANT
DO NOT FERTILIZE LEYLAND CYPRESS WITH GARDEN FERTILIZER, (6-6-6,  8-8-8,  10-10-10, and 16-4-8 LAWN FERTILIZER) THIS CHEAP FERTILIZER WILL INJURE OR KILL YOUR TREES. USE ONLY TIME RELEASE, WATER SOLUBLE, OR ORGANIC FERTILIZERS. Most of these are mild and non burning. Very safe to use and the nutrients are more readily available to your trees, providing you with a faster and healthier growing tree.

Water your newly planted trees 2 or 3 times a week until established. This usually takes 6 to 8 weeks in warm weather longer when cold. When soil temperature falls below 50 degrees all root development stops. Use some common sense when watering, all soils are different, you only need to keep the soil moist, not wet. More trees are killed by over watering than under watering.

RECOMMENDED FERTILIZER RATES

Water soluble 20-20-20 and 21-7-7 acid formula, use 1 to 3 teaspoons per gallon of water, fertilize 2 to 3 times per month.

Time release fertilizers use 1 to 3 tablespoons per tree (liner) as tree grows increase amounts. Apply once a year.
